Pressure cooker responsible for my conversion Feb 05, 2026 First of all, I love Kuhn Rikon kitchen gadgets.
Now, I had used an old pressure cooker in a past life when I was married but it was the kind with the little metal knob that perilously rested atop the lid. Never feeling quite secure, I relegated that to the back of the cabinet and it was never an issue in our separation of property.
A couple years ago, a friend prepared dried beans for me in the Kuhn Rikon Duromatic pressure cooker and from that day forward, I've been converted to and have bought my own. Although I could have used the 5 qt model, I splurged for the 7.4 quart model and I'm happy with that decision. This pot is taller and allows for more options in addition to it's larger capacity. I find having two handles makes for an easy and secure approach to moving the pot and draining the liquid, even though it does take up more storage space. When stored, I put a tea towel over the pot and place the lid upside down on top of the towel, having removed the silicone seal and put it inside the pot. All parts look nearly as good today as they did when I bought the pressure cooker because I thoroughly clean it after each use and store it in this manner.
The instruction and recipe booklet in my opinion is outstanding, easy to follow and well laid out. I've altered some of the recipes into non-meat recipes and have yet to produce a meal that wasn't great. Very impressive! I've found the removable insert has been helpful for vegetables and being able to have dried legumes in a fraction of the time as standard preparation is another advantage. Nutritionally, it's far superior as well, to escaping vitamins and minerals. Being able to easily watch and hear the sensing button rise makes for easier use than other pressure cookers because you don't have to watch like a hawk. I do not, however, leave the pressure cooker for long because I've learned that when it does reach the desired pressure, I want to be nearby to either turn off the heat or run water over the lid to more quickly reduce the pressure, depending on the food I'm cooking. Most of the recipes I use require the first approach, but I have used the second on occasion. I also like the ability to restart the process if I've been too eager in reducing the pressure. For me, it's easy to tell when the pressure has reached the stages and I have no problem reducing the stove heat to maintain that pressure. All in all, I'm extremely happy to use this pressure cooker and only wish it weren't so expensive so I could buy one for my daughter, too. She's asked me to keep an eye out for a sale for her.

is Duromatic better than the lesser priced KR 7.4 qt pressure cooker? Jun 18, 2025 I thimk the simpler less expensive KR product is as good as the Duromatic. The only advantage being an easier way to release pressure.

Great Pressure Cooker!!!!!!!!! Jun 16, 2025 Far better than the hissing monster it replaced!! Heavy-guaged stainless steel body and lid.
Designed never to hiss until or unless safety valves releases because of an abnormal function!! Very quiet and efficient. Superior construction!!

Pretty good, not perfect Apr 05, 2025 We don't cook a whole lot and never planned to use this PC much, but it does get occasional use. It seems to have both good and not-so-good features. On the down-side it does seem to be kind of flimsy and made of very thin metal, maybe this is all the thickness needed for this PC. We had a T-Fal (if I remember right) that was so thick and heavy it had to be bulletproof, worked very well and cleaned up beautifully. I dropped the lid on the tile floor and it would never seal up again, since we don't use a PC often we kind of forgot about it.
We live in a foothills suburb west of Denver at over a mile in elevation and lots of things take longer to cook as water boils at a lower temp at higher elevation (200 degrees instead of 212), and even with a PC you still have to add extra time to anything you cook. When you then add the time needed for natural pressure release (recommended for most recipes it seems), which can be like 20 minutes, you're not saving as much time as you might think. "30-minute lamb stew!" Yeah, right.
We cook on an electric Ceran cooktop, a great-looking piece of work with no knobs, just touch the glass, so it's easy to clean and when not in use looks almost invisible. But it is electric so any cooking needs some extra care as electric burners don't adjust heat very quickly. Using the PC (and any brand would be the same), takes more attention than I'd like to put in. The old jiggle-top PC's didn't need to be watched much as you could hear it across the room - if it was hissing and burping it was doing its' stuff. The Kuhn-Rikon needs to be watched a lot as it is very quiet and it's easy to overheat if you're not watching. Eventually I find the right setting, but it's different every time as the amount of food inside is always different. On the big plus side you need very little liquid in this pot, as it loses very little to steam while cooking, and the food flavor seems a lot more intense.
The first time after use we soaked it in hot soapy water for a while (quite a while actually), and cleaned it up exactly as recommended, and noticed a lot of almost white small circular stains at the bottom. I don't know what would cause this, we had done short ribs with red wine, and browned the ribs in a separate pan so maybe it was the wine. We Used Bar Keepers Friend as recommended, and hesitated to really scrub it with anything stronger like SOS as there's supposed to be some special titanium coating on the stainless steel.
Overall We found this to be good for our uses with the limitations we knew about before purchase. It is a beautiful piece, almost like art, quiet during cooking and needs litle extra liquid, a big plus. It also takes more attention than we'd like to spend on it, but if we cooked on gas it would probably be easier.

Our Favorite Cookware Jan 28, 2026 We have three Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers that we use almost every time we cook - this is the main cookware we use. It's fast, easy, and it saves energy becaues it takes less time to cook. And the food's great - I like eating at home better than any restaurant.
